Ontario weather is tough on paint. Timing your exterior project right is one of the easiest ways to make sure your paint job lasts 7–10 years instead of peeling after two winters.
The short answer
Late May through early October is the ideal exterior painting window in Toronto and the GTA. Within that window, late spring and early fall are often the sweet spot: warm days, cooler nights and less intense sun.
Temperature rules we follow
- Air and surface temperature above 10°C while painting and for several hours afterwards (some modern paints allow lower — we follow each product’s label).
- No rain in the forecast for at least 12–24 hours.
- Avoid direct, blazing midday sun on dark surfaces, which can cause lap marks and blistering.
- Avoid heavy dew by starting after surfaces dry in the morning and stopping before evening moisture.
Further north? Plan a little earlier
In Barrie, Orangeville, Aurora and Newmarket, cold nights arrive sooner in the fall. We recommend booking exterior work there for June through mid-September.
Book early
Exterior calendars fill up fast every spring. Booking 3–6 weeks ahead gets you the best choice of dates. Interior projects, on the other hand, can happen all year — winter is a great time to get them done.
